The True Work-Home Life Balance

With work-related stress costing Britain 10.4 million working days per year, there has never been a more important time to improve your work-life balance. Whether you are in a fast-paced job or struggling to find the time to devote to your friends and family, I’ve put together some top tips for improving the balance in your life and giving yourself more time to focus on the things that really count.

Leave your email alone

If you are struggling to strike the right work-life balance, consider banning work-related emails from your home. Instead of responding to clients throughout the night, or taking phone calls when you should be spending time cooking a meal or cleaning your home, you should answer emails exclusively when you are at the office. That way, you will be able to set clear boundaries, reduce the amount of work you do outside office hours and, in turn, free up time for more enjoyable things.

Nearly half of 16 to 34-year-olds check their emails from work in bed, but while that may be good for business owners who need their staff to be constantly connected, it can also make you feel overloaded and overworked. It therefore really pays to know when to turn off your devices and disconnect from the world of work.

Leave your work at work

When it comes to finding the right balance between home and work, you need to be able to genuinely leave your work at work. This means, if you follow a traditional working pattern, you should finish up for the day and leave the office when the clock strikes 5pm.

This way, you’ll be able to switch off and accept that you have reached the end of your working day, instead of taking home the stresses and strains that your job may involve when you continue with your duties into the evening.

Spend more time focusing on you

Although most of us would probably like to work less and have more free time, there are certain limitations to how flexible you can be when it comes to your job. It is therefore essential to take time out of your day to focus on you – whether that means going for a jog, reading a book or joining an arts and crafts club. These may seem like small luxuries, but they can soon add up and give you a sense of purpose and worth outside the workplace.

Even if you only have one job yourself, most of us also have a whole host of life roles that require our time and effort – after all, we are all a friend or child to somebody. Therefore, ensuring that have the right work-life balance will enable you to perform better in every role in your life – not just the ones for which you get paid!
